EXTENSIVE GRASS FIRE. (Press Association) ASHBURTON, Jan. 26. The most extensive grass fire, in the county for years started this .afternoon six miles south, of Hinds. The blaze destroyed the country plantation, thousands of acres of pastures and many oat stacks, extending a distance of twelve, miles. Over ldO men fought the- flames for six nr seven hours, saving four houses and a. wool shed which contained two seasons’ clips. There was no Joss of stock, but a large implement shod was burned. HEAVY LOBBY USERS. (Presa Association-. PALMERSTON X., Jan. 26. Users of heavy lorries will find more than passing interest in a Judgment of Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, on a claim lor damages, based on a collision- between a petrol wagon, weighing seven tons, and a baby Austin, weighing scarcely ' more than seven cwt. The evidence did not disclose negligence on the part of eith.u- driver, but His Worship held that the owners of the fletrol wagon had taken a. risk in sending,a cumbersome vehicle over a road which, by reason of its dangerous nature, compelled the driver to use. the centre of the road instead of keeping to his left. The accident happened at a sharp corner. The lorry bonnet was well over on the left side, but the tail was across the road, leaving no room for the Austin to pass the lorry. The driver admitted he did not travel on the left, as required by the motor regulations, as it would have been unsafe with such a heavy vehicle.

IX.)T*RED RELIEF WORKER COMPENSATION' GRANTED (Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. Jan. 20. Reserved judgment of the Arbitration Court, in a claim for compensation made by John Frederick Vogel, a relief worker, against the Paparua County Council, was given in favor of the plaintiff. The case was .heard in December and it was of general interest since it dealt with the responsibilities of local bodies in tho matter of compensation for injury suffered by men given work under unemployment relief schemes. The court held that the plaintiff, who was receiving 12s Cd a day for three days per week, was entitled io compensation on his average weekly earnings of 37s Gd per week, notwithstanding that he liad to staiud down one week in four.
