GISBORNE CLUB SECOND TRIAL FOURS The first round of the Second Trial Fours was completed on Saturday when five races were rowed off. One race of the second round was also decided Two races were rowed in the morning. In the first of these Rait (sir), Crawford-Smitli, Burne and Colebourne were defeated by Hunter (str), Le Compte, Dudley and Crarer. Both cre ws went away 'veil at the start, Rait having a slight advantage, but, after a few strokes, the boats collided. When they got going again Hunter had a substantial lead. Rait pressed hard and made several unsuccessful attempts to TCgain flic lead, but. the distance was too much and Hunter won by just over a length. The next race was contested between De Costa (str), Armstrong, Jennings, and Kidd, and Zachariah (str), Gardiner, Martin, and Sealv. Both crews got away together at the start and stayed toother kilt Roebuck Road vas reached. Here Zachariah hit the bridge, but did not lose much, and just before tbe foot-bridge jumped well ahead owing to the other boat’s striking slack water. De Co-ta made several efforts to catch up. but Zachariah passed the post first with clear water between the boats. The first race in the afternoon was rowed between Weatherly (str), Coates, : Callaghan and Loushman, and Allen (str), Anderson. G. Slade and Gwen. Allen got away at the start, and at Roebuck road, bad a length on bis opponent. Weatherly swung out. however. and was just getting ihe lead at Derby street, lie siirinted home, and passed the post- a length ahead of Allen. , . Hanna (str). Alley. Carey, and Wen defeated Brown (str), Knox, Potts, and Malcomson. Brown was not as last off the mark as his opponent, and by the time Roebuck road was reached was about, three-quarters of a length behind. He pulled up a little, however. but Hanna’s combination was too much for him. Hanna won by a length and a quarter. The final race of the round was rowed between Lentil (str). Oliver. Somerville, and McCallum, and Hay (str), Egan. Soderston and R. Shaw. Both crews got away well at the start-, but Lentil gradually assumed, the lead. Hay made several attempts to overtake him. hut was unable to do so. Lentil passing the post a little more than a length to the good. A good race was seen in the first race of the second round, when Bell (str), Walker. Morrison and Craig beat Briffault (str) Thodey, J. Slade, and Sheet. Briffault. went well out at the start and at Roebuck road, was a length to the good. Bell, however, had the advantage of the course and drew level at the foot-bridge. Both crews -raced level for a time, but an extra spurt put Bell in the lead at Derby street." Briffault was unable to come up again, and Bell passed the post a bare length ahead.
