INDEPENDENT COALITTONIST FEELS UNEASY
WILLING TO CONSIDER
WITHDRAWAL
(Prpßw Association.) EKETAHUNA. Nov. 20,
In the course of an interview today, Mr A. H. Vile, Independent C-oalition candidate for the Masterton seat, stated that the entry of. a Labor candidate into the contest at the last moment did 'not occasion him much concern. Ho had received such splendid assurances of support during his tour of the electorate that he was sanguine of success. Nevertheless, if supporters of the moderate cause thought there was a danger of a Socialist slipping in lie was prepared to allow a committee of representative men from Masterton, Eketahnna, and Pongaroa to determine whether Mr Sykes or himself should withdraw. INDEPENDENT EX-MINISTER IN BITTER MOOD MR ATMORE .CONDEMNS COALITION NOW PREFERS DISTRICT TO PARTY (Press Association NELSON. Nov. 20. Mr H. Atmoro. M.P.. an Independent Liberal, ex-Minister of Education in the United Cabinet, addressed a crowded meeting in the Theatre Royal last evening. He said he stood in the same interests as at the last election. He could have been a Coalition candidate, but seeing that all the principal portfolios, with one exception, had been handed to Reform, and that the Coalition had adopted the Reform policy, it was in the interests of Nelson and the Dominion that he should give his support to measures calculated to advance the welfare of the people. He condemned the Reform party for extravagance and the abolition of the graduated land tax. Many members of the Coalition were apostles of gloom, who could only think in terms of increased taxation, which further increased unemployment. Ho preferred to tender .his allegienca to the people of his district rather than to the party leaders.. The candidate was accorded, a vote of thanks and confidence.
INDEPENDENTS IN PARLIAMENT
NO ROOM FOR THEM TO-DAY
“If ever there was room for Independents in Parliament, there is no room for them to-day”, said Mr 11. S. ’S, Kyle, Coalition candidate for Riccarton when addressing a meeting at Prebhleton. Mr Kyle attacked the Independent members of the last Parliament for their actiohs the four sessions. Mr Kyle* said that they had in Parliament men who 'called themselves Independents. Mr C. A. Wilkinson, the leader, had said They were not a party but a group. However, they had their own room, 'met together, and almost invariably voted together.
