REDUCED OUA.VI' CAUSES concern. REPRESFNTATIOXS "TO BE MADE 'TO GOVERNMENT. (Press Association’ PALMERSTON N., Nov. 19. Deep concern at the curtailment of the grant by the Government for the maintenance •of Massey Agricultural College was expressed at a meeting of the council, and subsequently the chairman, Sir George Fowlds, ’stated that tire council had given very serious consideration to the matter. •It had definitely to face a reduction in the grant this year from £15,000 to £J 2,625. This was £875 more than the 10 per cent, cut anticipated, for which they Had made provision, largely by a reduction of salaries. The proposal to reduce the grant next year to £IO,OOO would be disastrous to the college. Any such reduction would necessitate the abandonment of research work, and that would be calamitous for the agricultural industry, of the Dominion.. The council authorised Sir George Foulds,. with a suh-committee, to make strong representations to the Government to prevent Ll>o curtailment of the usefulness of the college which would necessarily he involved if the contemplated drastic reduction in the grant wa 5 carried into operation. •AWARDS.
