Tliirty were drowned when the Chinese steamer Fooyuan struck a rock in Kiuilington rapid in the Yangtse Gorge, foundering and blocking the narrow navigation channel 30 miles up tlie river. Her ■sister ship, .the Yukiaug, standing by to rescue the passengers, was suddenly fifed on by shore bandits, who prevented attempts to rescue the passengers aboard the sinking ship. .One Mildred and twenty were saved before the attack.
