AID TO AFGHANISTAN

BRITAIN. HONORS SIR-A. CHAMBERLAIN’S* PROMISE

LOAN OF £172,000 AND GIFTS OF RIFLES AND MUNITIONS. (U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON. Feb. 24. The British Government will shortly announce a loan of £172,000 to Nadir Khan, .King of Afghanistan, and also a gift of 10,000 modern rifles and 5,000,000 rounds of small arm ammunition. This is in response to Sir Austen Cl Lambert ain’s undertaking; in tho House of Commons in January, 1929, when ho said that if a strong central government was established Britain was prepared to accord all possible assistance in the reconstruction of tho country. This is important, not only to trade, but, since the, same tribes occupy both sides, one' cannot be disturbed without an extension, of tho trouble.

Tho gesture is not anti-Russian, nor associated with personal relationships with Nadir Khan. The promise was actually made bofore his succession to the thixmo.
