Mr J. C- Westboven, deputy director of postal services, bas been appointed Federal Public Arbitrator, in succession to Air Atleo Hunt, who retired last year. The position carries a salary of £2OOO. The arbitrator has power to fix salaries and wages of Federal public servants, over-riding tho Public Service Commissioner.

The appointment is regarded as a result of a Cabinet decision to proceed with salary reductions. The arbitrator has th e status <of a judge. Ilis awards are binding, and the Government is relieved of the responsibility of making reductions.
