OBITUARY

MR. WILLIAM J. HUESTON

Widespread regret will he felt at the death on Saturday morning! in Cook Hospital,- of Mr. William J.'Hueston for many years a member of the staff of Messrs Adair Bros. Ltd. Mr. Hueston bad been in good health until the past week, but then sustained a sudden attack of illness from which he failed to rally.. The deepest sympathy will be extended to the members of the bereaved family, one son, Mr. Les. He Hueston, of Gisborne, and three daughters, Misses Dorothy and Norah Hueston, of Gisborne, and Mrs Thompson, of I’atea. Mrs Hueston passed away some years ago.

The late Mr. Hueston .was born in Clyde (Otago) 61 years ago and- entered the drapery trade as a lad, gaining valuable all-round experience in both the wholesale and retail departments of the business. About 30 years ago lie came to the North..lsland and was employed at several of the large drapery wholesale houses in Wellington. being manager for a time of Messrs Macky Ixigari. Caldwell Ltd., Wellington. He arrived in Gisborne to take an appointment of manager of the drapery department of Messrs Common Shelton and Co., just before the war, afterwards being employed by Messrs Adair Bros, until his recent retirement from the service of that firm.

Mr. Hueston was a very keen bowler and took a leading part in the administrative side of the sport, hav. 1 ing been honorary secretary of the | Gisborne Bowling Centre since its in- ; itiation. He was a member of the Gis. borne Bowling Club and enjoyed great success as a skip, representing the club j and the centre in a number of tournaments and carrying off many trophies. Dudfield, Pro. j sident of the Centre, said the death of Mr. Hueston bad come as a great shock to Gisborne bowlers, all of whom would join the speaker in extending expressions of syma'thy to the family and relatives. In the capacity as secretary of the centre, which position he had hold since its inception, Mr. Hueston had proved a valuable and efficient worker. Mr. Dudfield added. He had 'handled The-'-sfl'airs of the centre- with great care, and was thoroughly liked by everyone. As a token-of respect to Mr. Hueston’s memory the players engaged in the tournament wore black armbands. The funeral was conducted at Tarulieru Cemetery yesterday afternoon by Canon 11. Packe. There was a large attendance chiefly of bowlers and numerous floral emblems were laid upon the grave. The pall-bearers with the exception of Mr. A. G. Beere, were executive officers of the Gisborne Bowling Centre. They were: Messrs A. G. Beere, B. Dudfield (president of the Centre), T. F. Crawford (vice president), J. A.. Wyatt, A. W. Mason and D. G. Robertson.
