KNOCKED DOWN BY BUS
WELL-KNOWN LADY'S END
WELLINGTON STREET TRAGEDY

An unknown married woman, rd/ed about 35 years, was run over and killed instantly by a railway bus at the intersection of Stout and Feathcrston . streets before. 10.30 o’clock last night. The only clue to her identity is supplied by a wedding ring on the inside of which are engraved the initials M.L.V.—3/2/30.” Tho bus, which was driven by P. J. Carroll, was one oil those used on the Wellington-Lower Hutt run. It is customary for these buses to go a short distance along the road past the Lambton railway station in order to turn round. \Vhile the bus was turning round'the woman wits knocked down and killed. She was apparently crossing the road. 'Hie driver of the bus stopped quickly, and after a hurried investigation communicated with the police. Death -must havo been instantaneous, for ono of tho wheels passed over the woman’s head. Tho body was removed to the city morgue. Later. Tfc was a shook to many to find that tho lady who was the victim of the street accident was Madame •John ITannah, a Indy of high culture wlio had travelled much, and whose talents wore always at the disposal of charitable and kindly causes of all kinds. Mr. Hannah died some years ago. Tbe deceased was a daughter of Mr IT. E. Nicliolls, of Khandallali. CHILD FATALLY INJURED IN C.VRI COLLISION* CORONER. FINDsTdRIVER, NEGLIGENT (Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Oct. 2. At. the inquest into the death of Dotty Frances Albrey, 7, who died in hospital on September 23, six days alter a motor accident at Oroun Downs, Charles John Dunbar Skinner, of Feilding, gave evidence thrtt on September 15 ho passed a grader working nn tho Sandou-tlimatangi road. He was travelling at not more than 20 miles an hour, when a girl darted fight out in. front of the ear. lie swerved to the right to miss her, hut did not apply the brakes, as it was too late, and the bumper caught her. William Gilbert Hope, the grader driver, said'Skinner’s ear, when level with the grader, was traveling at from 30 to 35 miles an hour . The girl ran across 30 yards in front of tile car. which swerved to tho right., struck her, and pulled up 72 yards further on. Had the brakes been applied, the accident would not havo happened, said witness. Tho eoroner returned a verdict that tho deceased died following fracture of tho skull, sustained through being knocked down by a ear negligently driven by Skinner. CAR OVERTURNED UNFORTUNATE SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES. (Press Association PALMERSTON N„ Oct. 2. A doubo inquest was hold before tho coroner, Mr. A. J. Graham, concerning a motor accident near Awaliuri, on,September 11, when Herbert Henry Griggs and his infant gratylson, Peter Prace, lost their lives. In the former ease, the coroner returned a verdict' of accidentally killed, adding that the accident, was due to an unfortunate set of circumstances. The deceased met two cars and apparently pulled too far off the bitumen. In attempting to regain the road ho overturned his car. Tn the ease of child tho coroner returned a formal verdict iu accordance with the medical evidence.
