MONTHLY MEETING

Tho monthly meeting of the Gisborne -Harbor Board was held yesterday, the chairman, Air. .). Tombloson, presiding over the following members: Messrs T. Todd, G. Smith, T. Quirk, A. O. Steele. A. Wade, a. -1. Nieol, W. O. Bruce, H. ,J. F. Tumble son, A. A. J' laser, T. .(orson, A. H. Wallis, J. B. Broad hurst and Dr. Collins.

Carson, reported as follows: “The weather experienced since last report has been very unsettled with '.southerly winds predominating. The entrance to the harbor has been much -improved in regard to the depth of water.. Cross, soundings oi the entrance were, taken on Soptein•ber 12. With the heavy seas that have been mini ng in the roadstead during the month the depth at the entrance has not shoaled. Tins lias been a good test and makes one optimistic for the future. On August 30, a fresh was running in the Waiinata liver from 4 p.in. to midnight, velocity of the stream being about o knots. This fresh swept the diversion cut clear of sand and soundings taken on September 1 showed a depth of water with zero on the gauge, within the breakwater of nothing less than 4 feet. About half cable outside of the cut breakwater a bar was formed with a depth of water o to 4 feet. The heavy seas running in the roadstead during the month have, driven this bar 200 feet inside the cut breakwater end—depth ol water '2 feet with sand spit forming from tlio westward. This entrance will never be safe as the depth of. water will always fluctuate- according to weather. 'The navigation lights are all in good order and condition. ' The report was adopted.
