SATURDAY’S REGATTA

L.V.A. SHIELD TO POVERTY BAY. WAHIOA CARRIES OFF NEILL SHIELD. The fates were kind to the rowing fraternity on Saturday after, noon, perlect weather being experienced tor the annual inter.=elub re gatta rowed on the Watpaoa river. Crowds lined the banks to watch keen contests between representatives of the Gisborne and Poverty Bay rowing clubs and the Wairoa Boating Club. A lengthy programme, featuring races up to two miles, kept the interest of the many spectators at the highest pitch tnroughout the afternoon. Shield and the sculling events lor Mr. G. A. Neill’s Shield, which trophies were both held last season by the Poverty Buy club, who retained the former with honors, winning every event in the competition. They were, however, forced to re.inquisli the Neill Shield to \Y airoa Club, wno earned off the sculling honors with four points, Poverty Bay bemg a close second with three points, gained in the senior sculls, wliicn it. J. Patty won by default from E. >l. Gotre (Gisborne) and 1). Jonos (Wairoa), Wairoa annexing too junior and youths’ events. A cabaret in the evening, held at Lo Grande Lounge in honor of the visitors, proved a great attraction and many couples tripped "the light lautastic” to the strains of Mr. Geo. Chrisp’s orchestra. During the evening, Air. B. H. Aislabie, on behalf of tho Licensed Victuallers’ Association presented the L.v.A. Shield to Air. H. Linstrom, captain of the Poverty Bay Club, the latter, in expressing his thanks, stating that the olub’s success had lieen largely duo to the splendid coaching of Alessrs J. Webb, Alc-i-eod and J. O'Neill. In the absence of the donor, Air. Linstrom then presented toe Neill Shield, to Air. . J. Gilliga.Ti ? captain of the Wairoa Uub, the latter responding on bcha.f of that body. Both presentations were concluded amid thunderous applause. Results were:

Senior Tours (2 miles): Povorty Bay, It. J. Patty (str..), J. T. Hill, E. Fitzmaurice, A. Ancell 1; AY’airoa, J. Gilligan (str.), D. Jones, W'l. Lane, V. Lane 2; Gisborne, 0. Forbes (str.), R. Hanna, J. Bain, S. Scott 3. At the mile, Poverty Bay still held an advantage gained in a fast start, followed by Gisborne, with AY airoa a close third, coming up fast. The last-named crew passed Gisborne but Poverty Bay went I»ast the post two and a.half lengths ahead, third three lengths back. Time lOmin. 53secs.

An even start, and then Poverty Bay drew out from Gisborne with W airoa last. At halfway,, however, the W ai_ roa crew had. taken second place but was finding it hal'd, to stave off determined opposition by Gisborne. Roche (Poverty Bay) soon after the start, rowing with a long, sweeping stroke, until at halfway ltoclie began to come up but faded away over the last stages to lose by ten lengths. . The Wairoa man took the verdict with six lengths to spare. E. Fitzmaurice (PovertyBay) did not appear. Youths’ sculls (1 mile). —J. Geminet (Wairoa) made no mistake about it, taking the lead early, and at halfway he led DeCosta (Gisborne) and J. Packman (Poverty ISay) in that order, the last-named very close up.
