DEFIES LEAGUE.
WOMAN REFUSES TO GIVE LAND
GENEVA. Sept. 30.
Will Mrs Barton, the philanthropic English widow of Geneva, be able to hold out indefinitely against the 55 nations who want a portion of her property in order to get to work on the’ new palace of the League’of'Nations, which has already been planned?
League officials declare that the existing offices are hopelessly out of date and that the lack of proper accommodation and the, fact 'that various sections are in some instances as much as a mile apart result inevitably in a wastage of time and money. 1 ' ' •/ Mrs Barton, whose husband during his lifetime was renowned for his philanthrophy, is, not holding out with any idea of “profiteering”-—money offers have entirely failed to shake her—but because she claims the right to end her days in her beautiful lake side property., Unless she relents an alternative scheme of building will in all probability # be sanctioned by the League' authorities.
