OUTBREAK IN AUCKLAND. COSTUME COY’S PREMISES GUTTED. (Press Association.) • - ? ' AUCKLAND, Nov. 24. 1 A tire that threatened to ho of a sensational nature took place, on the premies of the Manchester Costume Company in Ruru. Street a little hettixe noon to-day. 'The building is constructed of wood throughout, with the exception of the roof. The fire occurred on the ground floor, which is below the road level, and quickly got a firm hold, licking up to the second floor and ceiling. After half an hour’s hard light, the City hire Brigade had the/ outbreak well in hand. The Company employs close , Upon 60 hands and these left work at 10.45 a.m., when work ceased for the week-end. The executive, members of the firm, including Mr H. Winters, were in the factory until a little after 11 o’clock, when everything was reported to be in and the building was' locked up as Usual. Shortly after they had gone, the work room was in flames and a passing railway man gave the alarm. According to Mr Winters, th 6 stock on the premises was valued at well over £SOOO anti the machinery at £lo(JO. The new season’s samples wero under way and the loss would be-hard to replace. He was of opinion that the losses would run to well over' £SOOO in stock and fittings, while -the machinery, valued at £ISOO,- was all ruined. The insurances are unavailable.
