FORTNIGHTLY MEETING/ ffihe fortnightly meeting of the Gisbprne Borough/ Council was held last, evening, the Deputy-Mayor.. Cr J . Blair, .presiding. There were a.,sopresent: Mrs.J. W. H. The executive, also suggested that the entrance should be made at the west end of the domain, and that cattle stops should be erected instead of gates. An application for installation of a Kerbside petrol pump in front of Ormond’s Motors was referred to the Engineer. The Medical Officer of. Health (Dr H. B. Turbott)i wrote requesting the Council to 'notify a Te Hapara resident to remove the accumulation of junk on his property to the borough rubbish dump, as the deposit was likely to harbor rats.—The matter was referred to the Sanitary Committee.

An application for the position o f borough dog Lax collector for 1929 was received from Mr F. C. Gribben. —ln view of the fact that an increase was proposed in the charges for 'collection the matter was referred to the Works Committee. Permission to screen pictures on Christmas Day wa§.- sought by Mr N. 11. Handricks, of the Majestic Theatre. —It was decided that the Council should witness the programme before" permission is granted.

A communication from the Municipal Association stated that the annual conference is to be held in Wanganui during the first week in 1929 and remits for consideration must be forwarded by December I.—The Mayor said that the Town Clerk had prepared a remit in connection with the Rating Act, which, after being read to the Council, was adopted. The Engineer-m-Chief of Public Works Department wrote inquiring the Council’s opinion concerning damage to roads by heavy motor vehicles and asking if a heavier class of construction had been adopted owing to vehicles in excess of 3 tons, plying over them. —The matter was referred to the Town Clerk and Borough Engineer to collaborate in a reply , . , , hollowing upon complaints by residents of Haiti beach concerning the use of the level stretch of sand by certain motorists and cyclists as a speedWy, the Harbor Board applied to the Boroqgh. Council last night .to authorise its traffic inspector to act for the Board to prosecute any Person driving on the beach in a dangerous manner in accordance with the Board’s by-laws governing the control of the foreshore. —The Council assented to the proposal. The delay in delivery of the new British omnibus for service in Gisborne was mentioned in a letter by Messrs John Burns and Co., Ltd., who appealed to the Council to waive the imposition of the penalty clause. The report of the Works Committee stated: — ■ , , , Owing to urgency, the Mayor had opened tenders for painting the “Star” bus and the lowest, that of Mr. Robertson, was accepted.—His action was confirmed. A discussion •ensued upon' the method of ordering supplies and' the committee recommend that the engineer be empowered to obtain his supplies in larger quantities .in the. best and most economical markets. Workers’ Dwellings : The engineer reported" that lib desired one of the Workers’ Dwellings for an employee whose duties necessitated his living adjacent to his work and it was decided that in cases where a dwelling was required by an employee of the Council, that outsiders occupying same should be given reasonable 110tico to vacate.

Unemployed Relief Work: A letter was received from the R.S.A. offering another £75 upon previous conditions! and it was agreed to expend this amount, together with Government subsidy, on wages to relieve unemployment among the local K.S.A. The total contribution from this source this winter is now £475, and the executive- are to be highly commended for the help afforded to those comrades who . are unfortunate enough to be out of employment. Owen Road: Tins road was inspected when it was ascertained that the drain had in no way interfered with the footway, and your committee recommend tht a lamp be installed at the intersection of Owen and Tyndall Roads,, provided the ..Cook County are agreeable to pay half the cost of maintenance, this being a boundary road. The Reserves Committee reported that a visit of inspection was made to tba .Rutene Road reserve, when it was ascertained -. that the locality was- wet,. The engineer reported that even before the rain it was his intention, to roll the ground, but was unable to'do so -owing to its being too wet and'soft. It was therefore decided that tho engineer should take the necessary levels with a view to laying out a. ground in the •north-eastern corner of the reserve, supplying, details of the cost or draining and construction. The most suitable reserve for tennis courts would ha. Score Point. ' but this area is. under cultivation and will not revert to the Council until April next.
