FIRES
PORTION OF PRAM FACTORY GUTTED. (Press Association.! DUNEDIN, Nov. 11. The upper story of the pram department in the workshops of Messrs j. and W. Faulkner’s premises in Castle Street was gutted by fire about 5’ o’clock this morning. The fire brigade was summoned at 5.16, but beiore the outbreak was extinguished considerable damage had been done. A huge quantity of metal was completely ruined, bv fire, v aiuabie coppered steel wire that cannot be replaced, and large stocks of brassware were rendered useless. The whole of the upper floor was reduced to a tangled mass of wreckage, and practically nothing was saved. The stock, on the ground Hoor was considerably damaged by water. In one place twenty-five tons of bright steel bars were covered Avith water, and these will all have to be cleaned and dried immediately. The fire was fortunately confined to one department, and no other nart of the building Was damaged. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The building was insured for £ISOO, the stock for £2500 and the machinery for £2OO, all in the Royal Exchange Assurance Coy. . ; UNOCCUPIED HOUSE DESTROYED. (Pres* ABBoolatlon.' AUCKLAND. Nov. 11. A six-roomed, house at Castor Bay, Tayond Takapuna, owned by Mr. W. F. : Handley, was destroyed by fire, together with the furniture, late last mght. It was unoccupied at the time.
