SKIRTS TOO SHORT.
REBUKE FROM NEWSPAPER. Princess Astrid, consort of. Prince Leopold, the. heir to ,the Belgian Throne, has received impolite "hint from the Belgian clerical; newspaper “Re Vingtieme Siecle/t \ that her skirts are too short. Referring to her Royaj Highness’ presence at the ceremony at Mons, the paper sajs that people are “certainly wrong” who sav that she was wearing “a too parsimoniously measured frock.” The paper adds that the error of a day or two does not prove anything, for the radiant beauty of tlie i rincess arouses admirations, even without the addition •of such trivial daring. “Dur. Sovereigns and Princes know only too well,” the article says, “that an example coming from the Throne or even from the steps of the Throne has irresistible force and is the most substantial bar that can be opposed to .shameless fashion.. “They know too well that the people are accustomed to respect dignity to the degree to which the Court itself respects it.” A piquant incident is recorded by the same journal. Recently, it appears, an insufficiently gowned lady was escorted from a Court ball by tho chamberlain, acting on the King’s orders, “so that she might” (as the official carefully put it) “repair an unfortunate rent in her gown.’’.
