WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
(Special To The Times). OPOTIKI, Nov. 7. At the monthly meeting, Mrs. Absolom, the newly elected president, was in the chair, over fifty members being present. A competition “animal sketches,’’ arranged by Miss Holloway, caused much laughter, some of the drawings being most comical. The prize was won by Miss ■'J. Ferguson. The debate on “Modern Dress” was followed with much nterest, Mrs. Scott and Hiss Roberts taking the affirmative, and Mrs \Vilson (for Mrs. Skuse) and Miss White the negative. The remarks c? the different speakers were received with applause. " Miss White caused a sensation when she appeared in a costume of forty years ago, and to show the contrast with the costume of to-day walked round the room with Mrs." Scott. TVhen put to the vole as to which side had put up the better argument the negative won. Mrs. P. Black gave a pianoforte solo which was much appreciated. The demonstrator for the evening, Mrs. Birmfleld, was not well enough to appear. The roll-call, “Recipes and household hints” brought a good response. Mrs. and Miss TVatkins were in charge of the “bring - and huv” tables. T'.esfln.mes Holloway. Merry. McCaidon. Noh'e and Scott were hostesses, and provided a bountiful supper. ’.'hue n-nv members were proposed. The singing of “The National Arnhem” brought the evening to a .lose. The next meeting will be held tn December 14.' '
