MR. J. T. CAMPBELL AWARDED ROSS FELLOWSHIP

. The achievements of Mr J, T. Campbell (son of Mr and Mrs A. Campbell, of Palmerston Road, Gisborne), during a brilliant university career, have been, watched with pride locally, and the outstanding intellect of the young student has brought him further honor. The Knox College Council has elected him as Ross Fellow for 1929-1930.

The Ross Fellowship isi of the annual value of £l5O, with free quarters in Knox College. _lt is tenable for two years, and is open to those who graduated as internal students of the University of Otago, and who have sat- for honors in one or more of the following subjects: Languages, mental and moral -philosophy, history; economics, and mathematics. . , Mr. Campbell was a pupil at the Te Hanara School undej; the tutorship of the late Mr Faram, and his secondary school education was received at the Gisborne High School, where he won a University National Scholarship. The year following his matriculation he went south to the University of Otago and entered Knox College. He did well in Latin, andi won the prize in his year _ m English. In mathematics he specialised and has always been the first man of his year. Last year he graduated 8.A., and stood first of the 30 candidates ■ from the four' university colleges of the Dominion. He was awarded , the senior' scholarship' in mathematics, with an average mark of well over 90 per cent. , In commending . the Gisborne*, boy in the .College-Council, Professor R. T. Bell said : ' { l know of no student who. as Ross Fellow would be more likely to gain the esteem of all classes of students, or who' would, exert a better influence, among them.” Mr Campbell’s. election has given great pleasure to his fellow students in Knox College. Mr Campbell will be required in the terms of hia appointment to act as college tutor in mathematics.. His intention is to proceed, to higher work under the direction of Dr. Bell. As opportunity offers he will extend his knowledge ,of foreign, languages and literature with a view to study abroad after the expiry of hia present appointment. In this, talented young student,. Gisborne has. a worthy representative and heartiest congratulations are extended to him in mounting another rung in the ladder which leads upwards to fame.
