The Railway Department to-day ran an excursion train from Waipukurau to Tutira, thirty miles north from Napier., tiie farthest, point it is yet possible to reach on this end of the East C-oast railway. The object of the excursion was to give an opportunity to the people of Hawke’s Bay to gain an understanding- 'of the immensity of the undertaking, and in order that they might see first hand evidence of the splendid progress being made with the construction of the line. The route, on which there. are several long stiff grades, has involved the construction of innumerable embankments, bridges and viaducts, which gave the people much to interest them. >• Over nine hundred made the trip, and as a result Hawke’s Bay in general will be much more fully acquainted with the railway, which all are pleased to see being pushed on with such vigor and determination by the Public Works Department. Speeches made eh route by officers of the Railway Department, stressed the magnitude of the work. The engineering difficulties were explained and emphasis was laid on the fact that it is the desire of the Department to serve the people and' to gain their co-operation in effectively conducting railways generally oil Hie methods best calculated to advance tlie interests of the Dominion.
