THE WAIOURU FUJI TRADING COMPANY.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—We note tliat in the issues of the Gisborne Times or October 33th and 31st ulto., the United Party’s candidate, Mr Lissant. Clayton, has stated at his meetings that a company has been formed for the purpose .of farming the common rabbit in the Taupo district and also that tile Company prides itself upon having obtained :l special permit frobl the Government to do so. In fairness to the Company and for the information of the uubi c generally, We wish to state, that the Company’s property, comprising 16,000 acres, has been acquired for the purpose of farming sheep and cattle, also for tiie breeding of the improved breeds of British rabbits, , and that the property is rot within 100 m : les of the proposed Taupo railway. The permit {hat lias been issued to the Company is only one of many that have been granted to other prospective farmers of imported breeds of rabbits. If Air Clayton wilhouote correctly from the nrnsnectns of the Company, he must fairly aclnr 4 the Company proposes to breed omv the imported breeds of British Chinchilla and Angora rabbits, under the strict regulations required by the permit, which permits may be obtained by any person in the Dominion desirous of engaging in farming the imported British rabbits. Not only does the Company pronose to breed British rabbits for fnr, but it intends to kill as many of the wild running on adjoining lands as possible, in order to supply carcases to the markets, and bv S o doing will prove benefactors +•• the district concerned.'lf Air Clayton were as conversant with the submci :~s he suggests, he would know t'>it the, 'mported Chinchilla and Angora rabbits* will not exist under tiie same conditions as our ordinary rnbb’t. These animals are too valuable to be allowed free run of the country, as their landed cost approximately amounts to between £7 to, apiece. The Tauoo railway is of up interest to the Company and we fail to see how Air Clayton can poss hiconnect them. ITi.c misquotations from the Company's prospectus mnv appeal to him as subtle political campaigning—but the public may assume that he = has deliberately distorted fn.cts for the furtherance of his political aims. In concluson we may state that we regret that it should be necessary to have to publicly correct a candidate for political honors for what we must trrni. even leniently. campaignin'* misdemeanors, as the statements could not have been made in ignorance.—We are vours. etc.. S' M. BOLAND, E. C. HURLEY. Directors of the Waiouru Fur Trading Company.
