RIVALS SEPARATED.

FASCIST AND SOCIALIST DEMONSTRATIONS TENSION INI VIENNA RELIEVED RAIN DAMPS ARDOR OF BOTH I SIDES United Free* Assn, by El. Tel. Copyright (Australian Pra«» Assn.) VIENNA, Oct. 7. Thanks largely to the • precautions, the rival Fascists and Socialist demonstrations passed off* peacefully. All the entrances to the Winerustadt, except the main gates, were barricaded with barb-wire. Fifteen machine guns were posted in the principal, streets, and shock troops equipped with gas masks and grenades were held in readiness. Cavalry guarded the danger spots. The Fascists started first at 9 Q.mt., when 13,000 marched in procession carrying 11 flags and 15J banners, and accompanied by 12 hands. A moderate crowd cheered the procession, which traversed the main " square, saluting the leaders. The procession reached the place of assembly outside the town at 10.30 o’clock.

Simultaneously about 16,000 Socialists, with country delegations totalling another 19,000. assembled m the Rquare and sang and listened to speeches until 2 o’clock. Thus the iivals were effectively kept _ apart. Both gatherings dispensed quietly, a downpour of rain at 3 p.m. damping any remaining ardor. Several Communists, attempting to address the Socialist crowd, were arrested, otherwise the proceedings passed without incident.

MENACE NOT YET REMOVED FASCISTS BETTER TRAINED AND ARMED. SOCIALISTS DAILY BECOME MORE MILITANT. United Press Asbu. by El. Tel. Copyright (Times Cables.) (Received October 8, 9.10 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. The Vienna correspondent of the Times says that though the Viennese breathe a sigh of relict because the threatened storm has ' blown over, there is little cause for congratulation, seeing that one-third of the federal army and two thousand police are garrisoned at Neustadt. Despite the warning cf the July r.ots, in 197, nothing has been done to enforce internal disarmament. 'ihe Fascist organisation is at present better trained, disciplined and a. ed and also more numerous., but the Socialists’ private army is becoming daily better organised and more militant. Every Austrian knows the harm thu s done to the country's reputation abroad, but nobody attempts' to stop the intolerable filibustering. Economic conditions mainly explain the creation and development of the Fascist army as a struggle lor existence. The dangerously intense Fascist- movement represents • the Conservative and religious countrymen's Hatred oi the city s Godless predatory Reds.
