TIMARVJ TO CHRISTCHURCH RACE. ••• WON BY AY. - ARNST. (Ureas Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 6, ' The traditional nor’-wester prevailed for the Timaru-Ohristehurch road race to-day. There were many patches of loose shingle, with clouds of dust rising on parts of the road between Ashburton and Christchurch. The limit men got away sharp to time at 9.5 a.m., and it was 3.25 when tho winner entered the Show Ground to the accompaniment of a ••'burnt of ceering. The winner was li. AV. Arnst who won tho big amateur road race last Saturday, but, was disqualified, for allegedly accepting motor pace in the race. To-day be could find no one who would ride fast enough to please him, and for. practically the whole journey he rode aloud. -He is,;a. young rider who will lie heard 'of as his famous uncles Jack and Did*'Arnst were in _tlieir day. sl’lie fastest tiine was made by S. AV. McCann. NeW Plymouth, who, like Arnst, had'a make his own pace. Immediately after the finish, a protest was lodged against Arnst on the ground that he entered for the race after the entries were closed. It is said to be very unlikely The. protest will be sustained, for the executive of the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union met last week in conference 5 and decided to accept late entries. Arnst entered for the on Tuesday. Later. The protest was dismissed.
