The English cricketers arrived early in the morning and met a Ceylon team during thp day, but the match was spoiled by rain, which caused interruption from 12.3 till 3 p.m. Ceylon flatted first, scoring 96 for the loss-of seven wickets. Larwood did not-impress onlookers. Tate, though, always/ dangerous,. did not come up to expectations. Wtyiite bowled best, flighting the ball cleverly and making it turn quite a lot. He took three for 44—a1l catches. Leyland got two for 29, Tate one for 7, Hammond one for 9, Larwood none for 7. The onlv Ceylon player to make a score was the ex-Middio-sex; cricketer, Dr Kunasekera, vv.ho compiled 46. England has lost six wickets for 156—Hobbs 54 and Chapman 60. This pair, in a light-heart-ed partnership’, made 101 for the first wicket* in 45 minutes. Chapman hit four sixes. Hobbs amused the crowd by audaciously pulling on balls to the log boundary. Tatr* made 1, Ames. 7, Jafdine 3, Hammond 11, Leyland not out 13. cowling : Horan took _ three for 5, and Marlande two for 33.
