The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED DAILY FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1928. THE WORTHY POPPY DAY. APPEAL.

In the course oh, next week/' two observances arising, out- of •New Zealand’s memorable part in the Great War will be held in Gisborne, iis .in every other centre ? of New Zealand. One" will be the annual Memorial Service in honor • cif i .the -., district's Avar dead; the other, a proof of, gratitude- Do, ’ and /•sympathy .-'- for, those who, offering them lives, came through, to ’ an.,,. existence Which, foE spine, has proved ;.a- /sacrinheb-thap actual death upon the (bgittle-rfieid." sTh- eyei-y city of the Dominion, in., every tiny . settlement, on many ■■ a lonely hillfarm, are ex-soldiers whose everyday

life is, to-day, a trial of greater mc.gr uitude tlian any wliicii beset troops on active service. Ninety per cent., perhaps, of New Zealand’s war veterans have found their feet again and re-made for themselves niches ni civil life. But there (is a submerged tenth for whom the world no longer wears a rosy color. Knowing that '.public sympathy requires only a ’channel through which to flow to these war-broken men, the Returned Soldiers’ Association, comprising principally veterans whose own needs* are less great, has organised once again the Poppy Day appeal.' 1 Gisborne had evidence of the lasting spirit of comradeship inspired by qverseas service in the distribution of many hundreds of pounds in wages and relief to distressed exsoldiers and' their families last winter. The needs of the coming winter are not likely, to be less, pressing; Amongst those who will "'again administer the funds provided for the relief of ex-soldiers and, their dependants by the public of Gisborne, there is not one who stands in need of! outside assistance; of the great number of financial members boasted by the .Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association, there are but a few who have anything to gain personally from participation in its activities. The association is, primarily, one of fit men, able to stand on their own feet, but banded together for the purpose of assisting their less fortunate fellows, late brothers-in-arms and staunch comrades of the battlefields. Through this organisation help can be given to the “lame dogs” for whom the stiles, of life in civvies have proved too high. Those who contribute through the Poppy Day appeal may be assured that every penny of their donations will serve its high .purpose of relief and help in deserving cases; and, with this assurance, the appeal is commended to every resident of Poverty Bay as worthy of loyal and generous support-. •„
