N.Z. GOODS.

PREFERENCE PRINCIPLE AFFIRMED. The principle of preference to New Zealand-made machinery was affirmed 1 y the Borough Council last night. The subject was introduced by a letter from the N.Z. Federated Ironmasters’ Association and the N.Z. Amalgamated Engineering Unions seeking support to the following resolution : “That this joint meeting of representatives of all engaged in the engineering industry, both employers and employees, urge upon the Go\?c,lument, municipal and other local bodies the necessity in the interests of the welfare of the community as a whole, of purchasing within New Zealand all supplies and machinery which can be locally obtained, and that copies of this resolution be sent to the Prime Minister and to local bodies throughout New Zealand with a request that, as far as possible, it be adopted as a general policy to be followed in future.”

“I think that, as far as possible, all things being equal, we should purchase New Zealand made goods If we liny foreign articles we are sending work out of the country. 1 don’t mean that v/e should favor Dominion goods to a foolish extent by paying excessive prices, but on a fair basis we should prefer the product of Dominion industry,” said the Mayor, in proposing that the Council endorse the resolution. The motion was seconded By Cr. F. Collin and carried unanimously.
