. AUCKLAND, Fob. 13. The fire which swept the slopes ol Te Aroint mountain on Thursday and Friday, was got under control on Saturday, and the safety of the Do* main scenic reserve and hot springs a rep. assured. The fire had travelled through a mass of undergrowth to the mountain top in the direction of thousands of acres of busji country controlled hy the Forestry Department which lias taken steps to safeguard the area. Many volunteers re inained on the mountain slopes until 3 o’clock on Saturday morning and several had to he assisted home owing to exhaustion. During the height of the conflagration a portion of the trestling carrying a water main was burnt and the loss of valuable water supplies from the already depleted borough reservoir was occasioned. The Mayor states that full measures are being taken to sheet home the responsibility io' 1 the unauthorised lighting of the fire in the Ruakaka. area.
