FEWER BIRTHS

GISBORNE’S ANTAL STATISTICS

RECORDS OF PAST YEAR

Twenty-eight less babies were born in 1927 than in 1926, the death roll was ten fewer, and six more marriages were solemnised last year than during the previous twelve months. These facts' are adduced from the vital statistics- for the Gisborne district for the past twelve months. In that period the births totalled 531, the deaths numbered 190 and there were a similar number of marriages, whereas in 1926 there wore 579 births 2CO deaths and 184 marriages. That registry office marriages are becoming more popular is illustrated by the fact that of 190 weddings in 1927 48 of these were performed by the registrar, compared with 44 of these private nuptial ceremonies of the 181 recorded in 1926. The highest number of marriages by the registrar in any one month was in April last, year when ten wore registered, oiii. each month 'there were from two to five of such weddings. The statistics- for the past month show that there wore 46 births, 18 deaths and 24 marriages compared with 43 births, ]1 deaths and 21 marriages during the same period last year.
