TOURNAMENT NEARS COiNCLUSION YESTER DAY ’ S SUR PR TSE DEFEAT OF PRESENT MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONS CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. Owing to heavy rain, there was little play to-day in the New Zealand tennis champ : onships. ’ The matches did not begin till /titer three o’clock, when the combined doubles wore advanced to the semi-finals. As a result Mrs Adams and iLtetf France will meet Aliss Tracy and Wilson in the final. It should he an interesting match. To-day’s surprise was tiic defeat of the title-holders, Aliss Spoil's and D. G. France by Airs Adams and L. J France in two sots. The.court was heavy and the ladies played in stockinged feet. Lon France dominated the play. His brother was unsteady all through, and was frequently passed at the net. All the finals will be played tomorrow. Ollivier and Rartleet meeting at two o’clock. Following are the results:— —Alixed Doubles— Third round: Miss Spoil's and D. France heat Aliss Myers and Lampc 6 —l, 6—4; Mrs Adams and L. France beat Aliss MacFarlane and Sturt 6—l, 6—2. Semi-finals :' Aliss Tracy and Wilson beat Aliss Andrew and Seay 4—6, 6—2, 6i—4; Mrs Adams and L. France beat Miss Spcirs and D. G. France '3—3, 6—3. —New Zealand Plate— Second round: Lampe beat Boddy by default. Third round: Dagge beat Pearse by default, Walker beat Lampe I—6, 6 2, 6—3.; Wilson beat Knott 6—B, 6—2, 10—8, 6—2; Bagge and Angas have both advanced to the semi-finals.—P.A.
