BRITAIN'S HOUSING.

RECORD NUMBER, OF BUILDINGS COMPLETED LAST YEAR NO FEWER THAN 52.000 IN SEPTEMBER, LA ST LONDON, Oct. 17. Official figure’s show' that over 1,000,000 houses have been built in England ami Wales since the armistice. The actual number is 1.024.000 Of these 269.0(a) were completed in tlie year ended September 30 last, providing accommodation for approximately 1.000.000 people, and re ‘■ewer than 52.261 were finished in September alone.t These last two figures easily outdo all previous records. Tlie number completed in September is not far short of the whole yearly output in rhe pre-war period. To, some extent it is due to tlie fact that the subsidy which was granted to builders was reduced in respect of houses, completed after 'the end of September., so that special efforts were made by 'aiilders during that month. The Times considers that the millionth house, wherever it may ■ be, must stand as a silent tribute to tbe •'etermined endeavour made by the State, by local authorities, and by private enterprise, to overtake the arrears of housing accommodation which accumulated dnjang the war.— British Official Wireless.
