ASSAULT ON CELESTIAL
CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. “Chinamen are just as law-abiding as white citizens and are entitled 1 to as much protection” said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. ,at Christchurch this morning when he fined Jack Taylor, 25, a seaman, and ordered jjim to pay witnesses’ expenses and interpreter’s fee, 10s 6d, for having unlawfully assaulted a Chinaman the previous evening in Manchester street. P.A. ALLEGED THEFTS _ <£> LARGE SUM INVOLVED CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. William John Sullivan, 25, was remanded for a week and ordered to report daily to the police on a charge that between June 30, 1924, and March 19, 1927, he received sums of money totalling £950 on terms requiring him to account for it to the Canadian Government Mercantile Marine Co., Ltd-, and did fraudulently fail to do sb, thereby committing theft. Bail was allowed self in the sum of £250, and one surety of £2SO.—P.A. THEFTS FROM ROOM MATES. CHRISTCHURCH) April 5. Edward Joseph Foley, who appeared in Court in stolen clothes, Fas charged with a series of thefts involving goods valued in all at £26. Foley’s speciality had been stealing from room-mates and he had changed liis address frequently, leaving, behind a long trail of thefts. Mr. Mosley, S.M., sent him to the Borstal Institute for two years.—P.A. INSURANCE AGENT IN TROUBLE CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. Charged with receiving various sums of money totalling £950 and with fraudulently failing to account for them to the Canadian Government Mercantile Marine, Ltd., William John Sullivan, aged 25, described as an agent, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. He was remanded till Tuesday, bail of £250 and one surety of £250 being allowed—P.A.
