SENSATIONAL ROBBERY
LONDON JEWELLERY HOUSE BURGLARS.
AUDACITY OF THE CRACKSMEN NEW INSTRUMENT USED. LONDON, Jan. 24.
The most daring robbery recorded for years occurred in a West End jeweller’s establishment. The robbers used an instrument two feet high worked by a motor and steering wheel, with which a circular hole, ten inches across, was cut into a massive safe. The tool is now in the possession of Scotland Yard. It is the first of its kind found by the detectives, having been first heard of in South. Africa last year. Three men worked throughout the night and were ready to leave when the charwoman arrived. They actually opened the door, saying: ‘ ‘Good morning, come in, we have just finished repairing the electric light.” They thereupon left, taking jewellerv. including diamonds, valued at £IO,OOO. It is surmised they- intended carrying away the instrument, which was mounted on an iron base, but were unable to do so owing to the charwoman’s arrival. The room was strewn with powder from the fireproof material covering the safe, through which the drill had bored. — A.N.Z.C.A.
