SHOCKING FATALITY
ENGINE GLEANER FALLS FROM TRAIN. OVERBALANCED WHILST WAVING TO BROTHER. SEVERAL CARRIAGES BASS OiVER BODY. TERRIBLE INJURIES INFLICTED DUNEDIN, Jan. 25. A shocking fatality occurred, at the Milton railway station this evening, when the south bound express from Dunedin to Invercargill was drawing into the railway station platform. A young man named Robert B. Barlow, aged about 22 years, employed as an engine cleaner at Invercargill, was a passenger by the train. On arrival at Milton, he ivas standing on the carriage platfcrnr and was waving to his brother, who was the engine driver on a train standing at the siding. Evidently the young man overbalanced and fell between the carriages. He was killed instantly, several carriages passing over his body. Both arms were practically severed and his head was badly crushed. An inquest was opened before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., when evidence of identification was -given by the deceased’s brother Charles, an engine driver residing at Clinton. The inquest was then adjourned to a future date.—B.A.
ANOTHER VERSION OF ACCIDENT. INVERCARGILL. Jan. 25. As the Dunedin to Invercargill express pulled into Milan last night, at about 6 p.m., a young man, Robert Harlow, a railway cleaner at Invercargill, met his death in a horrible manner, lie was standing on the platform when the train pulled into Milton and swung himself off backwards with the intention of alighting. He evidently mistook the speed of the train and missed his footing, being drawn under the train. His body was removed from tlio rails terribly mutilated.—P.A.
