“WORST IN FORTY YEARS”
FLOODS AT TAKAKA
HEAVY LOSS OF STOCK AND FENCING. NELSON, Jan. 25. The Takaka district on Friday experienced a heavy flood, described as "’the worst for 40 years.” The river over-flowed the protection works and covered a wide area, including most of the town, where in some low-lying portions, the water reached the windows of the houses.
.Miles of fencing was swept away. The loss of stock is fairly heavy. It was thought that a youth, H. Sparrow, had been drowned, but he was found marooned on an island in the river. Telegraphic communication has been restored.—P.A.
