RAM FAIR

DECREASE ON LAST YEAR’S VALUES. ' ' BIDDING BRISK FOR HIGH QUALITY LOTS. The annual Ram Fair, conducted by the Poverty Bay Stockbrokers’ Association, was opened yesterday under most favorable weather conditions. There was a large attendance of buyers, and bidding was brisk up to a certain point on most of the higher quality lots. In all, 2400 Romneys were set down for the first day, but, though the sale was continued until late in the afternoon without a luncheon adjournment, the whole catalogue was not submitted. Undoubtedly \he lower prices offered this year for woll and mutton affected the market, for prices registered this year for wool and mutton afThe feature of the sale, however, was that, among competition from breeders from all over New Zealand, Mr. A. Kirkpatrick, of Gisborne, topped the sale in the flock ranis section, with two pens of 1-shear sheep, which realised 15£gns., and 15$gns., respectively. - The only lots that realised over lOgns. were from the flocks of D. J. Forlong (Buunythorpe,) K. Bremer (Wiiverley), and Voss Bros'. (Lohgburn). Several pens of rams offered on behalf of these breeders brought from 11 to lljgns.,. and all were good types of sheex>. Some of the lower priced rams, even a number offered on behalf or breeders of repute, were not of very high quality, arid the impression was conveyed to the mind of the discriminating buyer that the best of these breeders’ quotas had been sold privately. The majority of the rams submitted on behalf of local breeders were not of a very high standard or particularly suited for improving tne flocks of the district.-few of the local lots offered, however, proved that high quality sheep are bred in the district.

Towards the end of the day, the sale dragged, and very few lots were sold under tho hammer, though « considerable number of private sales were made at prices suitable to the owners.

Stud Romney rams were offered at noon and of ' the 15 submitted 13 found buyers at the owners’ ideas of value. The quality of some of the rams left much to be desired. Mr. W. R. Hunt had the honor of recieving the top price for the oneshear rams, 57gns. Voss Bros. (Longburn) offered the best average class of stud rams, three rams submitted by them averaging over 29gns. 'The ram that topped the sale was a model sheep of good type and bone, with a fine fleece. The second priced ram, which realised 33gr.5., was also a fine ram and except for slight coarseness in a section of the wool, was a better sheep than the higher priced ram. STUD ROMNEYS.
