WAIRENGA-O-KURI SPORTS

A MOST SUCCESSFUL MEETING

The annual meeting of the Wae-renga-o-kuri Sports Club was held under ideal weather conditions on Saturday, and proved to he one o: the most popular meetings in the history of the Club, and certainly, if the attendance of visitors from all parts of the district and tlic large number of entries for the various events can be taken as an indication, it must have been a huge financial success, and iullv repaid the committee for the amount of time and money spent in organisation. The grounds, which were kindly lent for the occasion by Mr W. B. Moasman, were most ideally situated, and proved most popular with picnickers. Across the road from the entrance gates is a large plantation of lines. A grove of willows runs light 'dirough one side of the grounds, and at the back “'The Laurels” homestead is situated, surrounded by several acres of native bush and imported trees. The low terrace above the grounds was lined with cars crowded with spectators viewing the sports below. The feature of the function was the number of entrants for each event, and in some eases the. number of entries excelled those received at many of the larger meetings held earlier ut the season. In the whip and bottle race there were 45 competitors, and the majority of the other events attracted over twenty entrants.

The organisation throughout was most creditable, botli competitors and officials seeming to combine to assure success, and no time was lost between the events. Much- of the credit is, undoubtedly due to the energetic secretary, Mr C, E. Matthews, who kept his secretarial duties well up fo time and worked hard to get entries in, so that there should be no delay on the field. The returns were all made out at the end of each event and prizes distributed during the day. At the conclusion of the meeting, the President of the Club, Mr _E. Wallis, presented the special prizes won during the day. Three hearty cheers for the judge. Mr Thornlev Sherratt, concluded the meeting. In the evening Mr Gillingham’s wookshed was crowded to capacity, when a dance, organised by the Club, was held as a fitting termination to the day. The music was supplied by Mr. McMullen’s orchestra, and the shed was artistically decorated with greenery and multi-colored streamers suspended from the rafters. Many visitors attended from town.
