CHAMPIONSHIP NEARING END

DUNEDIN, Jan. 3. All the unfinished games in the chess championships and the last round have been completed and the results are as under: — E. A. Hicks v. Pihi.—An even game until the end of the game was reached, when Hicks worked up a strong attack oh the King’s side, and followed it up with a mate a few moves later.. Erskine v. Kelling.—Erskine s extra material told against Kelling, and he resigned when a mate in three was inevitable. E. A. Hicks v. Purdy J —Purdy played an extremely hyper modern game and accordingly obtained a complicated mid-game, ©nt of which lie emerged with an advantage, which gave him a win. Purdy’s best game to date. Gyles and Craokenthorpe.—A regulation Queens Pawn variety conducted on the same lines _ as when these plovers met in AVellington in 1923. Gvies made a few purposeless moves, which Craokenthorpe took advantage of and won. Barnes v. Dunlop.—Dunlop worked up a combination which forced Barnes to draw by a perpetual check. Barnes v. Severne.—Barnes gained a slightly superior position but hardly sufficient to win when Severn© made -a blunder and lost bis Queen and the game.
