The AVairarapa Association wrote notifying that they were unable to fulfil their challenge for the Norden Cup on account of the lateness of the season, and hoped that Poverty Bay would still be holders next season so that they may have another match with Poverty Bay for the conveted trophy. The chairman and secretary were authorised to make arrangements in connection with the Haapu Bose Bowl and Kerekere Cup tournament, entries having been received from Matawai Ladies, To Karaka Ladies, Manutuke and Rovers Ladies’ teams. The final of tho hockey match for the Philpott Cup was p’aved to-day. and resulted in a victory for AA’esley (Auckland), which scored 6 goals to nil against AVes’ey (Christchurch). The game was devo d of interest though tho victors showed all-round superior play.

THAT HOCKEY!

(TO THE EDITOR.) Sir, —After the muddle consequent on the selection of the ladies’ hockey team to represent Poverty Bay, Mr Cassin might be induced to displav his well-known organising abilities by arranging a match between old players of the district and the redoubtable A reps. It might save the bacon of the selectors, but the A team would he well fried. The proceeds might be' stacked away to assist the worthy object of sending the team on tour next year, as I can’t see the public support falling over itself, as it is already treacling on its bottom lipover the whole affair. AYe can smack up- the Coast any time they like to hop out.—l am, yours, etc., 1 OLD . BIRD.

NOTES. ... (Bv “Shihpads.”) In reply to Mr Cassin’s letter of yesterday, I would suggest that though lie has the advantage of age. it is, questionable whether the honors of personal practical experience of hockey lie with him or myself. The policy of the Poverty Bay Hockey Association in not replying to ‘any , press criticism of their (mis) management of the local team savours of the wisdom of Solomon—obviously they have no explanation to offer. I most emphatically . deny that my criticism of Miss Hill's—or anl other player's —form was biassed. I cap boast the acquaintance of but one player among all’ who took part—and she was not a f orward : Compa risohs a re odious, but «n the fate'of it, 'the decision of the * selectors ./ seems ridiculous' when , it is' recalled-ihat at last year's tour-; : hament at'Nelson—in which Miss Hilt took- part—Miss Clark won the prize

for the best forward when more than double the recent number of teams were competing. This 'year, after another season’s experience, her farm apparently had so far deteriorated that sliq was not even included in the list of possibles! Admittedly, Aliss Hill’s form had improved somewhat in tho North versus South match on Saturday—after my criticism had ap-peared-—but I would remind Air Cassin that my report was based on the play during the whole tournament. He must agree with me that there are such things as sympathy votes.
