TOPICS OF THE TURF. (Bv “Cynic.”) Saturday morning was in every way favorable for training operations and visitors were rewarded by seeing something for their attendance. Automaton (P. Alcllroy), Cliaplin (H. Goscomb), and Ngawati (Leach) went from the barrier at mile post to the four furlongs in 57sec, which is a good hit oVer the distance. Automaton and Ngawati went well, and Chaplin, who had some weight, stuck to his task well.

Automne (P. Alcllroy), AVaioeku Jack (S. Leach) and Sunvay (A. Adams) went from the mile and a-quar-ter post to the four furlongs. Aiitomne .appeared to have a slight advantage at tlie death. Sunray went well under the conditions.

Scotch Mixture (C. Mason) went pleasingly over three fences. Kingi Pita (H. Renata), who will in future carry P. Alatu’s colors, jumped a round of the schooling fences cleverly.

Scottish King (0. Mason) is. another recruit to the jumpers, doing a round of the schooling fences safety. Grandiose (0. Mason') and-. Bhuck Apple (H. Renata) did a round of the schooling fences, both going fast and jumping well. La Autumn, Evensong, Perle Rouge, Cool Card and the 1 Miss 1 oily filly went from the mile barrier to the four-furlong post, Perle de Rouge proving the winner. The Miss Roily filly threw her rider arid, the saddle slipping badly, caused her to get a severe fright, jumping half a cozen fences and injuring herself severely ere being caught. . t The Autumn—Ukuin colt in A. Dixon’s stable was too good for Ins stable mate, tho Our King—Miss Ethel gelding; in a run from the mile post to the four-furlong post. Polydamus (Atkins) and the Arbroath gelding ran two furlongs, giving an impression that there is a future in front of them both. . When Frank Wootton was interviewed by the Press on his arrival m Australia, ho mentioned that the Ascot meeting had. been a black one and now that a full report is to hand one cannot doubt it. . Mr. -Corte.cn, who raced Heroic and others in Australia last season, is said to hataevipst .Lot HI O' over the meeting., Tho Aga Khan severed his'connection with B. Carslakc after the meeting. Oatslake could do nothing right. The Alexandra. Stakes (2 miles G furlongs and 88 yards), won by the French horse Seclin and in which Cnrslake’s mount ran second, saw nun

have his last ride for tho Indian Prince. Clarslake was on Salmon Trout in the Gold’ Cup and was thought to have given Santorb too big a start im the run home.. S. Donoghue is credited with riding the winner in a- finished manner. C. Huhno had the same experience as Carslake last year.' Carslake’s reputation is well assured, so he may not suffer through, losing the patronage of such a powerful stable. • The Queen .Mary Stakes provided a scene of great enthusiasm, as far as the subdued atmosphere of Ascot would allow it, for the King’s bay filly Aloysian led all the way and worn from the more-fancied Moti Mahal. Hereupon the Royal party-—the King, the Queen, Princess Alary andl the Duchess of York —left the box to see Aloysia unsaddled. Their Alajestios were clearly delighted and heartily congratulated the jockey, Ohildes, and their new trainer, W. Jarvis. The policy of retiring Derby winners to the stud seems to be the right course. Two of the place-getters in the famous Gimcrack Stakes are sons of Derby winners. Lex, by Lemberg, being the winner, Review Order, by Grand Parade, being third. Solario is another good one. He is by Gainsborough, who won classic honors in the ownership of Lady Jane Douglas. Sun Worship, dam of Solario, is related to Bill of Portland and Sir Archibald, both well-known to breeders in New. Zealand.

Royal Mint, which finished second to Bisox at New Plymouth, is a three-year-old by Catmint—Polly Perkins, dam of the hurdler Paddington Green. As a two-year last season he started on five occasions without getting into a place, and this was his first appearance this season. The nominations for the Metropolitan T.C. 1927 New Zealand Derby Stakes total 103. The chief contributors are IT. F. Nicoll (6), It. M. Morten (6), H. W. Kitchingham (4), F. Holmes (3), A. Bice (3), and J. Westerman (3). The defunct Logan Pointed has 27 representatives in the list, Author Dillon 14, Matchlight 10, Rey de Oro 10, Sonoma Harvester 7, Brent Locanda and Happy Voyage, 5 each. A notable entry in the New Zealand Cup is Malaga, the Auckland Cup winner of 1921. Malaga’s last race was in the Final Handicap at the Canterbury J.C. autumn meeting in 1922.

An early foal is looked upon with a large degree of pleasure, and Dr Ring is in the happy position this year with Fraisette, the English-bred "daughter of Valais and Fraise, who produced a fine filly to Valkyrian in the' second week of August (writes “Phaeton”). Valkyrian, sire of the youngsters, is a highly-bred horse by William the Third (son of St. Simon), so that something good may he expected from the filly. According to Air F. Al'cManemin, Lady Cavendish is a bettor sprinter than Automue. The latter is set to gve the- filly two pounds in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, but. taking into account the sex allowance of lh, Lady Cavendish has 31b the worst of the weights. J. O’Shea, who now fills 11. Gray’s vacated place as chief rider for E. George’s New Plymouth stable, started well with a win on Rafa. at the North Taranaki Hunt meeting. Tamatete’s three-year-old full-sister, Ohui, started a very hot favorite in the second division of the Trial Plate at Feilding, but she was last away, and although handy on the turn she finished out of a place.
