TAMWORTH TRAGEDY
SENTENCE INCREASED TO SEVEN YEARS.
(Received Julv 31, 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 3.
The appeal of the Crown against, the sentence of Withers came beforethe Full Court, which iucreased the* sentence to seven years’ hard labor. (Withers, when charged with the murder of his _ wife at Tamworth. pleaded not guilty. In a statement he said his wife was guilty of misconduct with Edward Mussen for whom she worked. He said on the night of the tragedy he went to seehis wife at Mussen’s house, and as Musser had previously threatened to shoot him he took a revolver for protection. While talking to his wife she bumped the revolver, which exploded, killing her. The jury returned r verdict of manslaughter under intense provocation and Withers was sentenced to twelve months’ gaol.)
