DEADLOCK AT MELBOURNE CONFERENCE.

MELBOURNE. July 31. It is learned that a deadlock has arisen in the del.beration of the sul>committee considering the slipping strike, over the demand of the owners that the roster system be altered and men picked up at the ship’s side without dotation from the union.
The industrial delegates contend that the abolition of the roster would permit discrimination and victimisation.
Both sides are adamant, and the prospect of a compromise is not hopeful.

A. sub-committee of the Shipping Conference has arrived at an‘agreement for a settlement of the dispute. The agreement provides for the abolition of the roster system but the owners will continue to engage men. at the mercantile marine offices during the hours of the old agreement and apply to the Seamen’s Union offices when casual vacancies are to be filled. An agreement embodying these forms is to be signed by both parties, for a period of eighteen months. A full conference will sit later. agreeahin’Fexpfcted to bb SIGNED TO-DAY - . The Marine Transport Group met but decided to wait until next week: before debating any matters of importance. MELBOURNE, July 31.
