BALL AT TO LAG A. BAY
(SPECIAE TO THE TIMES)
Seldom has there been such euthus iasm in any local event as that displayed at the fancy paper dress and masked ball held in Reynolds’ Hall, oir Thursday the 16th inst.. under the joint management of the iolaga Bay Bowling and Croquet Clubs. The hall, stage and supper room, gaily but tastefully decorated under the supervision tof Mesdames G. A. Neill, De Mortal!: and Fotheringliam, added greatly to the success of the ball, wbi’e the lighting arrangements by Messrs Ellis and Bull, put on the finislv’ng touches; the whole presenting a gay- scene of carnival life such as°could not he surpassed in any New Zealand city. The ball, which opened with the .Grand March led by the Bowling Club’s President/ Mr. G. A. Neill, and Mrs. NeilJ, presented an array of some seventy pretty costumes, which simply outdid the fashion hooks in effect and or’ginallty, and the judg'ng of which must have necessitated a brain-wave to arrive at a decision. Eventually the judges, Misses Millar and Gallichan and Mr Zachariati, of Gisborne, awarded the lady’s prize to Mrs Fotheringliam, who looked very quaint hub beconriig as an early Victorian Lady and carried off the part to perfection. Mr McCarthy was awarded first prize among the gentlemen, representing a Yeoman of the Guard of Tudor tunes, his stature dialling him to fill the part to perfection, whilst his uniform looked gay and. very realistic. The floor, wlr’cli was in exce’leut order, was graced hv some 100 to 130 couples and the lively music by Lockwood’s and Scott’s Orchestras was all that could he dcs red and the demand for extras started very early in the evening. Dancing was continued until 2.45 a .in. and oven then some 300 enthusiasts were loth to leave the scene of so much-gaiety. Sucli a successful hall reflects great credit on the offic a's responsible, especially upon the jo.nl secretaries, Mrs F. Wilkinson and Mr. G. Nei;h who d'd not spare themselves, hi making the event such a complete success. Another official worthy of. mention was the Bowling Club’s “rep.” lead, M.r McCready, who excelled himself in a. new sphere, being the manipulator of the claret “howl,” m which position ho made many lasting friends. The Ball showed a o ear profit ot £6O, which will enable both clubs to complete improvements anticipated.
