HORSE AND MOTOR

NO WONDER HE KICKED,

The patrolman at Broad, way and Chambers streets, in New York, held up liis hand. North, and sonth-bou.net traffic halted. In the van of the south-bound .traffic were two big, tired horses. Their harness was still on. Their Waggon Ima been left behind somewhere. They were through work, and it had been a hard day. Their driver was perched on the back of one of them. Just behind them was a Ford runabout. Its driver was of the opinion that the horses were taking up too much room. He honked and honked avid honked, but the weary horses paid no attention. Little thinks like that meant nothing in their weary lives. But the driver of the automobile persisted in honking, _ and he drove his car forward until its hood was but a foot or two from the heels of the outside horse. The horse switched his tail. The tail struck the radiator of the runabout. A series of squawks issued from the flivver’s horn. That was too much even for a tired truck horse. The outside horse lifted an enormous hoof and let fly. There was a crunch, a jangle, and the sound of light metal failing. The flivver flew back several feet. The horse let go one more wallop just for luck, hit nothing, and resumed its bored wait for the order iu move.

The driver of the flivver set up a dreadful wail. He threatened to sue the rider of the horses. He threatened all sorts of dire things. But the teamster, too, was tired, and did not reply. The traffic cop intervened.

“Let that be a lesson to you,” said he to the motorist. “The next time you get one of those flivvers keep it away from the horse’s heels. You can he thankful that the horse didn’t use both feet.” A loud cheer arose from the crowd. Tne traffic man’s whistle sounded. The horses trudged on wearily toward the Battery. The flivver awaited the rc-pair man’s truck.
