FARMERS AND THE LAND TAX
IHEISTCHUPvCH, May ft. The Taxation Commission finished its sittings here to-day. Air Pi. Alorton, sheepfarmer, of Tab Tapu, said that the land tax, as a class rax, was an evil example of the capital tax levied on the primary industry of the country. Tiie remedy, if capital was to he taxed,, was in a property tax, which would be levied on all property.
Air E. Hay, sheepfarmer, Pigeon. Bay, said that he was also opposed to a ianci tax. It would be the best day for New Zealand when that tax was wiped Tmt. He said the land would be better looked after and better improved. He contended that it would be much fairer to tax farmers on their income.—P.A.
