INVERCARGILL, May 6. The volume of building going on in Invercargill at the present time is indicated by the returns compiled by £ the Corporation Engineer’s office from permits issued for the past twelvo months.- During the year ending March 31, 1924, a total of 36-1 permits was issued for building in Invercargill, involving a sum amounting to £23*3,414, as compared with 234 permits and £123,091 in the previous year. The biggest building m rospect of which a permit has been issued is the new. Southland Boys’ High School, the sum involved being £35,000. Another public institution is the new South School, tire permit showing that £7939 has been allotted for this work. Permits for dwellings show a steady increase and there is also an increase in the amount estimated for business premises.

Interviewed by a Times reporter the secretary of the Invercargill Builders’ Assn, said that never during his ten years’ residence here had he seen so much building going on. It was the same in the country as m the town, and a noticeable .feature was the better class of dwelling being erected. The present position seemed to him to indicate the prosperity of the province. Architects state they are kept busy preparing plans of new buildings, one of which it is estimated will cost £70,000.—P.A.
