PRAYERS FAIL.
terriblfTravages of DIPHTHERIA. SECT THAT~WON’T HAVE DOCTORS. (Received May 5, 9.30 p.m) NEW YORK, May-4. . At Lebanon (Penninsylvania) disease lias made terrible ravages among the members of the Falvn Tabernacle, a small religious sect residing hers, whose tenets provide & cure for all ailments through prayei. Seven members have died during the past three w.eeks from diphtheria. No cognisance was taken after the first few deaths, but neighbours, thereafter sent physicians who, lioiv eeer, ivere not permitted to treat the afflicted. One family lost three members m a few days, but the surviving relatives only continued their prayers. The authorities were unable, under the law, to force medical attention upon the afflicted, anu were compelled to merely quarantine the house where the deaths occurred. The sect, moreover, conceals information concerning the presence of disease, disclosures coming only after death. —A. and N.Z.O.A.
