SAFETY RAZOR OPERAATIONS.

DOCTOR’S BREATH SAVES DYING GIRL.

How a girl was saved from deatli through an operation performed by her doctor with the blade of a safety razor is told in the New York newspapers, and confirmed by'the doctor himself. • , , Minnie Lifschitz, aged 23, was attacked with influenza, and the malady appeared to be following a normal course. Suddenly, however, she was taken worse, and when Dr Leon Antell was sent for ho found that she was -being slowly strangled owing to the contraction of the muscles of her throat. An immediate operation was imperative, and the doctor had no instruments with him. So he decided to make use of a safety-razor blade. The girl had actually stopped breathing, and no heart boat could bo detected when Doctor Antell made an incision in the patient’s throat and cut a small opening in the patient s throat and cut a small opening m the. windpipe. Then, placing his lips to the latter, he began to force his own breath into the gii-l’s lungs, After about a quarter of an hour there was a gasping sound, the heart began to beat spasmodically, and eventually respiration and pulse became almost normal.

Miss Lifschitz, unconscious, was removed in an ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital,, where a silver tube was inserted in the windpipe, blie is now recovering. , ~ “It was apparent,” said Dr. Anted, in an interview, “that all that was needed was to get air into her lungs. It was fortunate that I arrived when I did.. I was without any suitable instrument at the moment, and there was no time to lose.
