BUTTER TRADE.

A SLOW MARKET.

N.Z. OUTPUT SHIPPED DIRECT HOME.

LONDON, April 15.

The butter market is still terribly slow, and importers find tlie greatest difficulty in making sales, as buyers all seem to have sufficient stocks for present needs and are determined to use these before they buy again. But there arc some slight signs of improvement for Germany has resumed purchasing Danish after some months’ abstention, and America is also taking some Danish; also the lower retail price, 20d per lb., now ruling in England, is likely to increase consumption. Against ibis must he put the fact that the spring is here and England, Ireland, and Continental countries are all increasing their output. London importers attribute ilie slump in butter largely to the fact that considerable quantities of New Zealand have been shipped direct to provincial centres, where it came into competition with Danish and sales could he effected only by lowering prices. This, of course, is an expert’s views, but Londoners’ contention is that London is the host centre of distribution for butter and shipments to out ports, where the demand is comparatively small, only have the effect of withdrawing buyers and competition from London. — A. and N.Z.C.A.
