The Princess first asked that the money be given to a philantropic object and then expressed a wish that only a few hundreds be spent on jewellery for herself and the rest devoted to the Girl Guides Movement, particularly the training camp for leaders and the hospital camp for girls requiring a country rest. The Princess thus hopes to benefit movements extending to all tlie Dominions and touching the entire girlhood ui the Empire. Owing to tlie genera., wishes of the subscribers, the organisers spent considerably more upon a personal present than the Princess suggested. SYDNEY, Feb. 13. Over 12,060 women in New South Wales have subscribed shillings 'to purchase a wedding gift for Princess Mary. At a meeting convened by the Lady Mayoress, Mrs. Layton said that £631 11s was already in hand, but there is still a little more money to come in from suburban municipalities.

On the proposal of Lady Fuller .it was decided to present the Princess with a picture by Arthur Streeton, showing a view down the harbor across the Botanic Gardens. The picture is now on its way to tlie Royal Academy, and Mr. Streeton has taken £2OO off Lis price and consented to let the committee purchase it for £6OO. A cable announcing that the gift is on its way will be sent to Princess Mary immediately. The balance of the money subscribed will be spent on a handsome book containing the names of all subscribers.

It was decided in the beginning that the N.S.W. gift should bo a personal one, and Princess Mary will no doubt appreciate the picture of Australian sunlight. Melbourne is endowing a hospital cot in Princess ‘Mary’s name, and Adelaide—which subscribed over £soo—is sending a tray cf Australian gold. NEW ZEALANDERS’ GIFT. JADE CASKET AND CHEQUE. LONDON, Feb. 11. Lady Allen and twelve other New Zealand ladies personally presented Princess Mary at Buckingham Palace to-day with a box made of New Zealand jade containing a cheque for a hundred guineas, to be devoted to some charity, the gift of New Zealanders resident or visiting in Great Britain. Princess Mary replied: “I thank you with all my heart for the wonderful casket. ‘ Such a signal mark of affection and token cf good wishes touches mo most deeply. It shall always he one of my most treasured possessions.”
