CAPITAL AND LABOR

PLEA FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING.

PROPOSED CONFERENCE OF EMPLOYERS AND WORKERS.

WELLINGTON, Feb. 22

A proposal for the creation of a better feeling and better understanding between Capital and Labor, introduced by the Auckland delegates at the sitting of the Industrial Corporation Conference, gave rise to a discussion.

Mr. W. Dearsley (Auckland) said That the problems and difficulties that nowadays presented themseives were principally the result of misunderstandings in the past and the application of wrong principles. He was convinced that the present mc-ans of adjusting industrial disputes sadly needed overhauling. He moved: “That this conference recommends the industrial associations of the Dominion to endeavor ,to arrange in their respective centres a confeieme with the manufacturing section of labor unions, with a view to creating a better understanding of our mutual interests in the development of musecondary industries." Mr. Mitchell (Wellington) said no good purpose could be achieved by such conferences. He questioned whether the Industrial Corporation was 'the right body to take the matter Up. It would be -distinctly futile to call such a conference as was proposed. ,It would be fraught with danger to manufacturers and to unions represented. After discussion the motion was. amended to stipulate a conference with employees engaged in manufacturing trades, and in that form was carried.—P.A.
