ALLEGED ASSAULT BY NEGRO

WAIROA, Oct,. - At the Police Court on Thursday, before Messrs Britnell and Bygum. an American negro, William Huntley Spencer, well-known m musical circles, was brought vp in custody on a warrant chaiged witn having assaulted Leonard Storey, secretary of the County Racing Club, causing actual oodily haim.' Counsel for the prosecution asked for a remand in order to prepare evidence, but the Bench deeded, as the case was indictable, to remand prisoner till October I'J, tin* regum; sitting.

LIQUOR CASES. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 7. In the Magistrate’s Court tills morning, Sidney Fincham, storekeeper at Mokau, was committed for trial on a charge of forgery in connection with an order for liquor for a proclaimed area. He was also fined £5 for keeping liquor for sale. Joseph Mills, licensee of the Okoto Hotel, was fined £5 for unlawfully allowing the consumption of liquor after hours and £2 for exposing liquor for sale after hours. Five other defendants were fined _£l each for being unlawfully on licensed premises.

EXCITING CHASE OF BURGLARS. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 7. An exciting chase occurred last night when two burglars _ were disturbed in an attempt to rifle a safe in the premises of Johnson i and Smith, motor body builders. The burglars operating on the safe were unaware that Mr Smith was working on the hooks in the next room.Mr Smith heard the noise and investigated, hut the'burglars made a rapid escape to the rear of the factory and over the fences. The police were quickly on the scene and made a search, which was resultless. The safe was closed, hut not locked, and the burglars were disturbed before they had completed their overhaul of the contents.
